I’ve been getting quite a few emails from readers about choosing the right domain name. It’s pretty straightforward but many people still aren’t sure about the best way to go about it.
I don’t believe any question is silly if it helps you get from A to B.
In fact, it’s very smart to put some thought into choosing the right domain name because you’ll be stuck with it for a few years.
Besides, the Internet is a pretty crowded place these days.
According to an article in Entrepreneur.com nearly 84,000 new domains are registered every day. This makes it harder than ever for a new business to stand out.
With most of the best names already gone, you’ll have to get pretty creative if you want to find a domain name that reflects what you do, is consistent with your brand and is memorable.
Even when you have an Aha moment, there’s no guarantee that it will be available on the main social networks.
A Good Domain Name Reflects Your Business
As you can see, there’s a lot more to choosing the right domain name than at first glance. Just like choosing the right business name, your domain name really matters.
In an increasingly digital world, it can communicate everything about you and your business in just a few seconds.
- What do you want it to say about your business?
- How do you want to be perceived?
- What kind of customers do you want to attract?
This is the thought process I went through when I decided to call my business Epreneur.TV.
I wanted a name that conveyed the idea of entrepreneurship, which I am very passionate about, but in the context of starting an online business, hence the “E”.
I wanted to connect with professional women who were looking to leave their jobs because they wanted to do something they loved, something that offered them more personal freedom as well as an independent source of income.
Since my own name is rather difficult to spell, it made sense to choose a short, snappy domain name like Epreneur for my platform.
I envisaged a positive, inspiring space for women everywhere regardless their culture or background and from where I could share my ideas and my journey about starting an online business.
Initially, my aim was to publish videos rather than written blog posts for a more interactive experience so I chose the .TV extension over .com. Although the Web TV hasn’t quite got off the ground yet, having the TV in the name tells people it’s coming soon.
My domain name may not be perfect but it’s good enough. It works for me and I’m happy with it.
Can you see why getting the right domain name is so important for you too?
How To Find The Right Domain Name
There are several ways to find the perfect domain name.
They all work a bit differently so it’s worth checking out a few to find the one you like best. Most of them will not only check the domain name’s availability but also let you purchase it right away.
Some of them can also tell you if your username is available on the main social networks.
Whatever you do, don’t skip this last step.
It’s essential for promoting your brand consistently online and building a professional social media presence. After all, the last thing you want is to register the perfect domain name only to discover that the matching username or vanity URL has been snapped up by a competitor.
One tool that can help prevent this from happening is Namechk.
If all this sounds too high-tech then you can also use Google’s free keyword tool, Keyword Planner, to get some ideas for a good domain name based on the most popular and relevant keywords for your niche.
I won’t go into how to use this tool here but just be aware that you will need to sign up for a free Google adwords account before you can begin searching.
Failing that, you can also choose the DIY option and simply brainstorm some catchy names that best communicate your start up idea.
Whichever route you take, be sure to check out the excellent infographic below by the good folks at WhoIsHostingThis.com. It’s a couple of years old but everything still applies.
